September in Scotland?

We are planning a trip to Scotland this September.

I stumbled upon this site while doing some research.

I have many questions, but will start with a few that I cannot find the answers to.

We will be traveling mainly through central Scotland and the Western Highlands.

Does the foliage start to change colors in September?

What is the average amount of daylight hours - (not sunshine, by the way - I understand that it can be rainy)?

Are the midges still a problem in mid September?

Many thanks,

Suzanne

We went to the West coast last September and had a dry week, fantastic sunny days.

the foliage does start to change colour in September.

Mid-Sept is close to the equinox, so 12 hours daylight.

Midges are less likely to be a problem in September; anyway they cannot tolerate wind stronger than4 mph.

Suggest that you might like to visit Fort William , Skye and Oban areas.. you can have some days off from driving by going on ferry trips, see Caledonian Macbrayne websitefor details.

Best of luck

BE WARNED:

MIDGIES!!!!!!

the leave just start changing coulour. day light is about 13- 10 hours.
The foliage will still be green

You will get around 12 hours of daylight

Expect rain at any time of the year

Sunshine is a bonus

The midges will be in attendance up in the West Highlands so take plenty of insect repellent.

Enjoy your visit :-)
I was in Scotland in Sept. about 10 yrs. ago. I didn't notice any fall foliage but it was the beginning of Sept. Had gales up in Orkney, cool and clear in Inverness, rain but not cold in Skye and Glasgow and cold in Edinburgh (snow flurries at the castle) but only for a day. No midges. Don't remember when the sun went down. Doesn't matter though, there's a pub on every corner. I love Scotland, enjoy.
